Statement on COVID-19

April 1, 2020

Dufferin-Caledon: Today, Sylvia Jones, Member of Provincial Parliament for Dufferin–Caledon, issued the following statement.

“Yesterday, we learned that there were positive COVID-19 cases in the Dufferin-Caledon community; including a patient and staff members at Headwaters Health Care Centre, as well as a second staff member at Dufferin Oaks in Shelburne.

I know that our local public health unit is working closely with both facilities to investigate and do the follow up required when cases are identified. Both HHCC and Dufferin Oaks are following the guidance of public health and continuing to monitor staff, residents and patients for COVID-19 symptoms.

Along with everyone in Dufferin–Caledon, my heart goes out to the families of all those affected. I want to thank our health care heroes who are working around the clock to provide the best possible care in our community.

During this pandemic, the most important thing you can do to limit the spread of COVID-19 is to practice safe physical distancing which will help protect the health of your family and loved ones, as well as everyone in our community.

Physical distancing means keeping a distance of two meters (six feet) from others, limiting all non-essential trips or errands, and stopping in-person social gatherings. This includes cancelling play dates at the playground and not having visitors over for dinner. It’s okay to go outside, but walks around the block should be for exercising, not for socialising. However, it is also important to check in with others, especially vulnerable or isolated family members, by either picking up the phone or connecting with them electronically.

As a reminder, if you develop symptoms of COVID-19, including cough, fever, and breathing difficulties, call Telehealth at 1-866-797-0000. Be sure to mention your symptoms and travel history, including any countries you may have recently visited. If you need emergency medical attention, you should call 911 and mention your travel history and symptoms. My constituency office staff and I are available to answer any questions you may have by phone at 1-800-265-1603 or visit my website: sylviajonesmpp.ca.
