Our Government is Protecting Drivers
December 2, 2025
DUFFERIN – CALEDON Our government is introducing new legislative changes designed to strengthen road safety and impose tougher penalties on dangerous drivers across the province.
The proposed measures, inspired by the “Andrew’s Law” petition, aim to hold reckless drivers accountable and prevent future tragedies like the death of Andrew Cristillo, a father of three killed by a driver later charged with dangerous and stunt driving. The legislation seeks to better protect families, enhance enforcement tools, and ensure Ontario’s roads remain among the safest in North America.
“Dangerous driving has devastating and lasting impacts on families and communities”, said Sylvia Jones, MPP for Dufferin-Caledon. “Our government is taking strong action to hold offenders accountable and make our roads safer across Dufferin-Caledon and Ontario”.
Proposed Reforms Include:
- A lifetime driving ban for anyone convicted of dangerous driving causing death.
- Immediate 90-day roadside license suspension and vehicle impoundments when police have reason to believe a driver is operating dangerously.
- Exploring a requirement that impaired drivers who cause the fatality of a parent or guardian pay ongoing child support.
- Increased penalties for careless driving, driving while suspended, and for commercial drivers convicted of distracted driving.
- Strengthened driver’s license eligibility requirements to reduce fraud and ensure only qualified drivers are licensed in Ontario.
