Ontario Expanding Transit Options Through Increased Support for Rural Transit

April 10, 2026

DUFFERIN-CALEDON – The Ontario government is doubling support for the Ontario Transit Investment Fund (OTIF), increasing annual funding from $5 million to $10 million over the next three years through a new $30 million investment in the 2026 Ontario Budget.

The expanded funding will help rural and underserved communities, including Dufferin-Caledon, establish and grow local transportation options that connect people to jobs, appointments, services and opportunities.

“Reliable transportation is essential for people to access work, health care, education and community services,” said Sylvia Jones, MPP for Dufferin-Caledon. “This new investment will help strengthen transportation options across Dufferin-Caledon, particularly for seniors, individuals with disabilities and residents living in rural areas.”

The Ontario Transit Investment Fund supports the start-up and expansion of projects such as:

  • New local bus services.
  • On-demand rideshare programs.
  • Door-to-door transportation services.

The program helps municipalities and non-profit organizations develop transportation solutions that address local needs, particularly in communities where transit options are limited or unavailable.

Eligible municipalities and non-profit organizations can apply online on an ongoing basis for funding of up to five years to support projects that address transportation gaps in underserved communities.

Applicants are encouraged to work together and form project teams with municipalities, community organizations and other partners to deliver coordinated and sustainable transit services.
