Ontario Expanding HST Rebate to Help More Families Achieve Homeownership
April 10, 2026
DUFFERIN-CALEDON – Our government is taking action to make homeownership more affordable by expanding the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) rebate on new homes, helping families across Dufferin-Caledon save more and enter the housing market.
As part of the 2026 Budget, the province is proposing to remove the full 13 percent HST on eligible new homes valued up to $1 million, providing homebuyers with savings of up to $130,000.
“This proposal will provide substantial relief to families across Dufferin-Caledon looking to purchase a new home,” said Sylvia Jones, MPP for Dufferin-Caledon. “By removing the HST on eligible new homes, we are helping more people achieve home ownership while supporting new housing construction in growing communities.”
The maximum rebate of $130,000 will also apply to homes valued up to $1.5 million, with the rebate gradually decreasing for homes valued up to $1.85 million. This builds on previous measures that removed the HST for first-time homebuyers on new homes up to $1 million.
Ontario is working in partnership with the federal government, which has agreed to cost-share the initiative, subject to federal legislation, covering the federal five per cent portion of the HST. Together, this partnership represents nearly $2.2 billion in joint tax relief to support housing affordability across the province.
The expanded rebate will apply for one year, from April 1, 2026, to March 31, 2027, and is expected to stimulate up to 8,000 additional housing starts, supporting approximately 21,000 jobs and contributing $2.7 billion to Ontario’s GDP.
