Math Supports for Dufferin-Caledon Students and Parents

Dufferin-Caledon – Ontario’s government has announced a major effort to improve math skills for students in Dufferin-Caledon and across the province.

“I am pleased that our government is investing in the students and school boards of Dufferin-Caledon and Peel Region to build the math knowledge and skills students need to succeed in class and in the future” said Sylvia Jones, MPP for Dufferin-Caledon.

This funding announcement includes:

  • $782,500 investment for Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board
  • $1,523,500 for Peel District School Board
  • $504,500 for Upper Grand District School Board
  • $309,623.89 for Conseil scolaire Viamonde.

These local investments are part of a larger strategy over the next four years that will focus on applying fundamental math concepts and skills.  Over the next year, our government will invest $55 million to ensure students are prepared for their future career paths. The strategy will also develop confidence for parents and families that teachers are capable of teaching math and adequately supporting students in Dufferin-Caledon.

“We are listening to parents and educators. Ontario students need greater support to strengthen their math skills to achieve success in school and into their careers. This investment provides our young people with access to the skills they need to enter the workforce with confidence, and further underscores our government’s focus on STEM in the classroom,” said Stephen Lecce, Minister of Education.

In Ontario and Dufferin-Caledon, EQAO mathematics assessment results for Grade 3 and Grade 6 have performed at a declining rate in the English language school system. To change this trend and improve math scores, our government will roll out a revised math curriculum for all grades over four years. In addition, new teachers will be required to pass a math content knowledge test starting in the Spring of 2020. This will ensure that teachers are confident and capable of teaching math before entering the classroom. In addition, these efforts will ensure that students in Dufferin-Caledon and across Ontario are receiving a quality education that will provide them with necessary skills to be successful in the future.

The four year strategy to improve math supports is a crucial step to provide students with the skills they need for success in their future careers.
