Improving Safety and Improving Transit Options for Dufferin-Caledon

The Minister of Transportation recently introduced The Getting Ontario Moving Act to improve the safety on our roadways for motorcyclists, frontline workers, and schoolchildren and improve transportation options across the province.

Our legislation targets dangerous and careless drivers that will increase safety on the road for drivers and our families. To put the risk in perspective, in Caledon, there were 833 people charged with distracted driving in 2018. Additionally, during a Dufferin OPP blitz this year in March from the 11th to 17th, 10 drivers were charged with distracted driving and another 8 with stunt driving.

Every time someone drives while distracted – not to mention impaired – someone else is put in harm’s way. Every Ontarian should have an interest in getting dangerous drivers off the streets. Tougher penalties is one way to do that.

We propose that the fine of going too slow in the left lane currently between $60 and $1000 be increased to $150 – $1000. This will increase the safety of roadways across Dufferin-Caledon, including on Highways 9 and 10 on the four lane sections, by enforcing that the left-lane is the passing lane.

This legislation will also allow single occupant motorcyclists to use High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes.

We are improving transportation options. Anyone who has driven into and around the GTA knows traffic and transit options are limited.

We will build the Ontario Subway Line to bring relief to drivers. Our government is using the previous planning already done on the relief line to build it cheaper and faster. We are collaborating with Mississauga, Toronto, and the federal government on how best to move forward with this project.
