MINISTER REFUSES TO FULLY IMPLEMENT PROVINCE’S CHILD PROTECTION INFORMATION NETWORK IMMEDIATELY

(Queen’s Park) – Today, Sylvia Jones MPP Dufferin-Caledon asked the Premier and the Minister of Children and Youth Services when they will allow all child protection agencies across Ontario to use the Child Protection Information Network (CPIN).

Last week the coroner’s jury inquest into the death of seven year old Katelynn Sampson delivered 173 recommendations. Just two years ago, the coroner’s inquest into Jeffrey Baldwin’s death produced 103 recommendations.

Recommendations from both inquests called for the implementation of CPIN, which would allow all child protection agencies across the province to share and access information to ensure the safety of our most vulnerable children.

“11 years since the death of Jeffrey Baldwin, only 10 child protection agencies will be using CPIN by June, while 37 agencies are still waiting,” Jones said.

“Since 2013 the government paid $13.7 million to Deliotte to consult on the software design of CPIN. Yet the Minister has decided not speed up the implementation of CPIN, instead choosing to spend millions on high-price consultants,” Jones said.

“We owe it to Katelynn and Jeffrey to get this critical program right. The Premier and the Minister need to stop spending on high-priced consultants and allow all child protection agencies to access CPIN,” Jones said.
