JONES’ LEGISLATION TO END GENETIC DISCRIMINATION PASSES KEY VOTE

(Queen’s Park) –Today, Bill 30 – the Human Rights Code Amendment Act (Genetic Characteristics), 2016 co-sponsored by Sylvia Jones, MPP Dufferin-Caledon passed second reading in the Legislature, bringing it one step closer to becoming law.

“I am happy to see Bill 30 receive the necessary support so we can protect a person’s rights including their genetic characteristics,” Jones said.

“Currently, individuals who undergo genetic testing can be compelled by insurance companies and employers to disclose their results and may be denied employment or insurance because of their genetic characteristics,” Jones said.

“Some individuals are getting tests without knowing the risks. On the other hand, individuals who know the risks and fear being discriminated choose not to participate in tests for clinic research,” Jones said.

“We must safeguard an individual’s genetic characteristics to prevent genetic discrimination. That is why I co-sponsored Bill 30, introduced by Mike Colle, MPP Eglinton-Lawrence,” Jones said.

“If passed, Bill 30 will incorporate genetic characteristics into the the Human Rights Code as a prohibited ground of discrimination,” Jones said.

“Ontario has an opportunity to take a leadership role and ensure person’s rights, including their genetic characteristics are protected. I look forward to working towards seeing Bill 30 enacted,” Jones said.
