Habitat for Humanity in the Community

I want to recognize the work taking place at Habitat for Humanity Canada and their local affiliates in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and Wellington, Dufferin, Guelph. I am happy to see Habitat for Humanity GTA is proposing a new development in Southfields that will see the construction of 10 townhouses and the planting of 12 trees across the development site.

Habitat for Humanity believes in helping families in need by building affordable housing with the help and support of local volunteers and community partners. Since 1985, Habitat for Humanity Canada has grown to become a robust organization that has helped the lives of over 2,800 families across Canada. This is a great initiative for local individuals to partake in and help those in need of proper shelter.

Habitat for Humanity is accepting applications for homeownership for their new development in Caledon. There is a three step application process that requires an individual review Habitat for Humanity’s homeownership criteria, attend an information session where they will receive an application package to submit upon completion. For more information on Habitat for Humanity’s application process please visit: http://www.habitatgta.ca/homeownership/homeownership-criteria/brampton-caledon.html. If you know someone that is in need of help and you believe is an ideal candidate for becoming a Habitat for Humanity homeowner, please encourage them to attend the upcoming information session on October 20th at Fortinos Community Room (35 Worthington Avenue, Brampton ON L7A 2Y7).

Another great way for individuals to help this important cause is to donate items from your home, such as furniture, lighting fixtures, appliances, tools, and building materials among other items to your closest ReStore location. ReStores are building supply stores run by local Habitat for Humanity organizations that take-in and sell new and used household items and building materials. This initiative helps fund Habitat for Humanity projects through the revenue generated from ReStore. In addition, it promotes protecting the environment by accepting new, gently used or customer returns that otherwise would end up in a landfill.  There are close to 100 ReStore locations across Canada, including two in Dufferin-Caledon, in Orangeville and Bolton. If you are interested in learning more about ReStore please visit: http://www.habitat.ca/findarestorep4235.php.

It’s initiatives like Habitat for Humanity that helps build a strong and vibrant community, and I encourage interested individuals to take part in this worthwhile cause
